letters from Ron:
Happy Thanksgiving 2007 To All My Friends !
I hope all of you are doing well, it has been quite some time since I found the opportunity to update this page, I hope everyone has been keeping busy and plying their trade :)
The last 10 months have been non-stop for yours truly. Starting in January I embarked upon recording indie-folk icon Eric Hill’s 3rd solo album (www.erichill.net), before heading off to the West Coast to do a series of drum clinics and master classes. I then made several appearances at the NAMM Show in Los Angeles at the Sabian, Pearl, Evans, Vic Firth, and Duallist booths before heading to Cannes France for the MIDEM show (www.midem.com), making waves as a number of great international labels agreed to distribute my forthcoming new release, the experimental and eclectic Elimotion Project II (featuring Matthew Garrison and DJ Logic). A Japanese and Russian tour are in the works for 2008, as well as appearances on BET’s “Studio Jams” TV program.
Back In NYC, I began preproduction work on funk-pop artist Jason Yudoff’s album “Tragic Hero” (www.jasonyudoff.com) , at the same time finalizing tracks for Eric Hill’s album and co-writing music with Robert Miller for PGS and with Russian rocker Allen Hammett. Throughout the spring I also found myself participating on a long list of album projects at Tainted Blue Studios (www.taintedblue.com) and other great studios in NYC including tracks for int’l pop recording artists Ashley Simpson, Kacie Sheik, Caroline Gulde, reknown children’s music composer Patrick Shaw, Rock En Espagnol, cabaret icon Jeffrey Wilgus, funk-soul-jazz stalwart Robert Miller’s Project Grand Slam, (the ever comedic) Fran Drescher, (playboy bunny) Lynn Verlayne, and Israeli pop-jazzer Gilad Ronen, in between performances and mini-tours with indie artists Katie Pawluk, Gjorgi, PGS, Eric Hill, Mike Mako, The Diggs, and others.
Jason Yudoff’s album "Tragic Hero" was completed in June, and I’m thrilled to be able to tell everyone that the album has garnered 4 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS … for Album of The Year, Record of The Year, Best New Artist, and Producer of The Year !!! What a priviledge !
In late June through July I entered the studio to drum on and co-produce with multi-grammy winning engineer Frank Fillipetti the new release for Robert Miller’s Project Grand Slam, at Legacy studios. A soul-pop-jazz album with hints of Herbie Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage” and Miles Davis’ “Star People”, the recording has already garnered a slew of Jazz Festival dates and TV appearances in 2008 (see the 2-minute soundbite clip on the “Read”/“Video” page). I also continued my many sessions at Tainted Blue, tracking TV spots for the WB, Hidden Palms, MTV, as well doing sessions for artists Alicia Keys, Parkview, Tori Amosta, Neal Coomer, J Records, and The Virgins.
The month of August was spent in Europe, with several drum clinics interspersed between an Eric Hill 3-week long tour in support of his new album, “Second Sight”. A truly great and inspiring time ! See the “News” page for photos from the tour !
The pace has not slowed this fall. Current projects include album production and tracking for (Jewel/Ani DeFranco inspired) indie-pop artist Kelly St. Patrick, goth-glam queen Ameilia Terry, as well as TV appearances and North-American dates with artist Jason Yudoff. Ron also recently partnered with two very unique web-based independent companies, “Drum Pro Now” (www.drumpronow.com), where producers & artists can harness the experience of select studio drummers at their own studios to custom-record tracks for their albums and recording projects; and WoozyFly (www.woozyfly.com), a new web-based independent music promotion and video-creation company that will feature reality-show e-programs starring Ron, including “Blondie Drummer Boy: The Producer”, which will chronicle Ron’s work with various artists and day-to-day activities behind the drumset and behind the glass; and “Song for Song”, where contestants will compete for the chance to have 3 of their songs produced by 3 different top producers. Episodes will begin hitting the e-airwaves in early 2008.
Finally, I feel very priviledged to have been invited by drummer Liberty DeVito (Billy Joel) and pulitzer-winning photo-journalist Jules Follett to participate in a photographic-essay hardcover book all about New York City drummers. Along with such renown drummers as Billy Ward (Joan Osbourne), Joe Franco, Clint De Ganon, Keith Carlock (Sting, Steely Dan), Anton Fig, (Late Night with Dave Letterman), and Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow), Ron was a featured subject of Jules's eye-spy lens. As she put it, “These drummers, I tell you, such character … It’s the stuff that no one sees, ‘cause they’re always so hard to photograph on stage, being way back there; these guys deserve the limelight ! “ In association with Modern Drummer Magazine and several other publishing sponsors, look for the book to hit store-shelves in late 2008.
Thanks again to all my friends near and far, for all your continuing positivity and support these past months, and I look forward to hearing from all of you and to sharing with you my times and travels as 2008 approaches !
Sincerely :-)
January 2007
Merry Post-Xmas and 2007 !
Here we are, it's already February and deep in the throws of a blistery winter !! Warmest seasons greetings to all my family and friends everywhere ! I hope all of you have been well, it's been another super busy period for yours truly :)
Last year was replete with national and international tours (with Sony recording artist Emiko in support of the worldwide "Artists Against Hunger and Poverty" campaign launched by World Hunger Year ( www.worldhungeryear.org ) along with fellow touring artists Bruce Springsteen and Michael McDonald; with Sony/BMG artist Simaku ( www.simaku.com ); with indie folk-pop artist Eric Hill and Hidden Drive; with blues powerhouse Tommy J), as well as a ton of tracking and album productions with Jeff Fiorello, Kacie Sheik (along with Rob Thomas), Kirsten DeHaan, Sony artist Emiko's DVD, Albanian pop icon Simaku, Japanese pop star The UnPerson, Lynn Verlayne, roots-pop sensation Gjorgi, Mark Savage, The Rosenbergs (as seen on Carson Daly), The Plaine Truth and Demeter. I also appeared with both artists Emiko and Jeff Fiorello on 2 episodes of Comcast/DishNetwork TV show "City Sessions" ( www.citysessionstv.com ) .
2007 has started out quite strongly, with plenty of album/studio work already in the bag and a strong continuation and demand for my work as both drummer and producer...and consequently the launching of my new record production website, http://www.ronthalerproductions.com . I have begun recording indie artist Eric Hill's forthcoming album "Molecules to the Light" (with whom I will be embarking on a European tour this summer in support of his new relase), and am in preproduction with Jason Yudoff and The New Hotness preparing material for their forthcoming release (Jason's last release was nominated for 8 Grammy's). I am continuing my work and association with Tainted Blue Studios where I have been very priviledged to be the in-house drummer as well as a staff producer for this unique studio and production environment located on 7th Avenue in the heart of Manhattan's Times Square. With new fixtures and famed producers Eddie Kramer (Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendrix) and Quincy Jones (Miles Davis, Michael Jackson...watch for an upcoming spread with Tainted Blue in People Magazine), along with studio owners Andrew Koss and Patrick Shaw, I find myself at Tainted Blue on numerous recording projects and sessions there, notably for Rob Thomas, Ali Lohan, Ashley Simpson, Sebastian Bach, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Debbie Gibson, and many others. Most recently I completed production of Florida born acoustic-pop sensation Jeff Fiorello's ( www.jefffiorello.com ) first release, featuring DJ Logic and alum from John Mayer's and Sting's bands.
And finally, I am scheduled to undertake several drum clinic tours throughout 2007. The UK in early spring, New Zealand in late Spring (as well as a producer tour with Eddie Kramer and Skip Henderson), Canada and USA in April and September, and finally a trip to several South American cities in the fall ... A full calendar to be sure !
Thanks again to everyone for checking out my website and keeping me in your thoughts ! I do genuinely appreciate your support, and I look forward to seeing you all very soon :-)
September 2006
Happy Labor of Love Day !
Here we are, it's already September, wow, time really flies !! Happy Labor Day to all my family and friends everywhere ! I hope all of you have been well, it's been another super busy period for yours truly :)
Since my last update (6 months ago... sorry it's been so long), things have really been moving. After international tours with recording artist Emiko (www.emikomusic.com) in support of the worldwide "Artists Against Hunger and Poverty" campaign launched by World Hunger Year (www.worldhungeryear.org) along with fellow touring AAHP artists Bruce Springsteen and Michael McDonald, I continued my traveling ways on North American dates with Albanian pop star Simaku (www.simaku.com), indie pop punk artist Kacie Sheik (along with Rob Thomas in support of his Katrina Benefit efforts), as well as with guitar phenom and blues powerhouse Tommy J in the midwest. I also recently completed a tour of Scotland, Bulgaria and Greece, where I had the pleasure of performing with indie folk-pop artist Eric Hill and Hidden Drive as well as doing a couple of clinics and masterclasses along the way (Glasgow rocks ! Thank you Paul @ Rhythmbase and Kevin @ Duallist!).
In between all these activities, I have been tracking new albums for Kacie Sheik (sister of Grammy pop star Duncan Sheik), Kirsten DeHaan "Under The Richter Scale" (Sir Lady), Simaku "Echoes of Iliria" (Muza/SonyBMG), Japanese pop star The UnPerson "Queens Decade" (LGR), as well as releases by roots-pop artist Mark Savage (LGM), power-pop-punk standouts The Rosenbergs (as seen on Carson Daly), rockers The Plaine Truth and Jair, and power-punk band Demeter. I also appeared recently with both artists Emiko and Jeff Fiorello on 2 episodes of YMC/Comcast/DishNetwork TV show "City Sessions" (www.citysessionstv.com) as well as on a live Emiko performance DVD for "Sessions From The Penthouse" for TBP Recrodings. And further on the DVD front, in mid- October I will be heading to Minneapolis to record a live performance DVD with blues powerhouse Tommy J before heading to the Europe to perform at the Birmingham Music Fair and then continuing to points east for other recording sessions.
And finally, my work at Tainted Blue Studios continues to be fast and furious. Since January 2006 I have been very priviledged to be the in-house drummer for this unique studio and production environment located on 7th Avenue in the heart of Manhattan's Times Square on numerous recording projects and sessions there, along with Rob Thomas, Ali Lohan, Ashley Simpson, Sebastian Bach, Alicia Keys, Debbie Gibson, and many others. I recently completed producing an album at Tainted Blue with Florida born acoustic-pop sensation Jeff Fiorello (www.jefffiorello.com), featuring DJ Logic and alum from John Mayer's and Sting's bands. Watch for a late fall release followed by North American tours in the New Year !
Thanks again to everyone for checking out my website and keeping me in your thoughts ! I do genuinely appreciate your support, and I look forward to seeing you all very soon :-)
Spring 2006
Hello and Happy Valentine's Season to all my friends !
Well February has almost come and gone, and I have been travelling and
recording like a bat out of hell :)
At the beginning of January, I emabarked on an international tour with (top 100) recording artsit Emiko (www.emikomusic.com) in support of the worldwide "Artists Against Hunger and Poverty" campaign launched by World Hunger Year (www.worldhungeryear.org). Along with fellow touring AAHP artists Bruce Springsteen and Michael McDonald, the tour took us through western Canada, the USA and western Europe before returning to NYC for two shows in mid-Feb. The second and third USA legs of the "Artists Against Hunger and Poverty" Tour will take place in March and April, and will have Emiko and The Gemini Station Project travelling through TX, MD, MI, MA, NY, CA, OR, WA, and select dates in Canada. Check out the "News" Page to see photos and read more.
In other Emiko news, Emiko and The Gemini Station are to team up with legendary multi-grammy winning producer Phil Ramone (Elton John, Billy Joel, Barbra Streisand) and world reknowned guitar icon Steve Lukather (Toto, Michael Jackson) to track her forthcoming album. With preproduction already in the works, and a tentative release date set for late fall '06, the band has been hard at work refining and writing new material, and I am very much looking forward to adding my drum stylings & tomfoolery to this great and crazy mix !
In between all these activities, I have been recording new albums for Kacie Sheik sister of famed pop star Duncan Sheik (with whom I will be heading to New Orleans to perform at the Delta Airlines Auditorium during the week of Mardi Gras) as well as tracks for Don Kemenker's "Blueberry Beer" (Narada Records, recorded with grammy winning producer Dan Hartung), Kirsten DeHaan "Under The Richter Scale" (Sir Lady), Simaku "Echoes of Iliria" (Muza/SonyBMG), Japanese pop star AKI "Precious Bugs" (LGR), as well as upcoming releases by roots-pop artist Mark Savage (LGM) and power-pop-punk standouts The Rosenbergs.
And finally, Tainted Blue Studio owners & indie producers Andrew Koss & Patrick Shaw have invited Ron to become the new in-house drummer for their unique studio and production environment located on 7th Avenue in the heart of Manhattan's Times Square. Tainted Blue Studios (formerly Quad) is a truly legendary facility that has been host to the making of many of the most popular and important songs of the last 25 years including recent hits by Alicia Keys and Ashley Simpson. In addition to working with Koss and Shaw on their many album projects and with many diverse artists, Tainted Blue has been the site chosen to host a new reality TV Show chronicaling the making & recording of songs by artists in a studio environemnt. TBP will be host to 12 bands filmed across 12 days, and I will have the pleasure of appearing on several of the shows with the featured artists. Stay tuned in early May !!
Thanks again to everyone for checking out my website and keeping me in your thoughts ! I do genuinely appreciate your support, and I look forward to seeing you all very soon :-)

Fall 2005:
Hello
All My Friends !
I hope you all had an excellent and productive
few months !
After a very busy and diverse summer, which had me participating
on a number of great album recordings (5th OF JULY’s with
grammy winning producer Matt Noble,
Japanese pop sensation AKI’s new album, and on Top 100 EMIKO’s
sophmore solo release), heading out to LA to perform on the Ellen
Degeneres Show with Atlantic Recording artist ELLIE
LAWSON, and doing some dates with recording artist STEPHEN
PATRIK (whose album I recorded back in January 2005 and
where the song "Purple and Red" is featured on NBC's
TV series "The OC"), the fall is suddenly upon us and
already my dance card is rather full !
To coincide with the release of the ELIMOTION
album (featuring Elijah Steele, DJ Logic, and Matt Garrison),
a European tour (including 6 dates in Russia!) is being finalized
for late fall. In addition, I will be touring Germany, Belgium
and Holland with indie pop artist Kirsten DeHaan in support of
her release "Conform" (produced by drumming great Jonathan
Mover), as well as performing at the second Live 8 Concert Series
broadcast direct from Ottowa Canada on October 15 ...
Indie Pop icon, and top 100 charting, EMIKO

very busy this fall. We have shows scheduled throughout the USA,
including two very special ones : “The 9/11 Memorial Concerts

Spring/summer 2005:
Hello
All My Friends !
Summer and the sweltering New York heat are upon us ! I hope you
are all doing well and coping as well as can be expected ....
with the finest air conditioning product money can offer !!
It's been a famously busy few months since my last update. At
the end of March mixing of the Elimotion
album (featuring Elijah Steele, DJ Logic, Matt Garrison) began,
and I hope to see the album on store shelves in the early fall.
In April, I performed an MTV Benefit with hard rock power boys
Terrifica, and then hooked up with Atlantic recording
artist and UK native Ellie Lawson (www.ellielawson.com)
for some shows and to head to Los Angeles for an appearance on
The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Ellie has been climbing the charts breaking
the top 100 recently, promoting her new album "The Philosophy
Tree" and single "Gotta Get Up From Here" (featured
in the new hit movie "Monster In Law" ).
In early May I did some dates with recording artist Stephen
Patrik (whose song "Purple and Red" is featured
on NBC's TV series "The OC"), and then headed down to
West Palm Beach FL to record an album with alternative rockers
5th of July with producer Matt Noble (Lenny Kravitz,
Ricky Martin, Elton John, Lauryn Hill) ... Matt is an exceptional
and energetic personality, a complete joy to work with... It was
a great time and the results sound amazing !! Thanks to Pearl,
Sabian, Evans and Vic Firth for supplying me in Florida with the
greatest gear around :) Look for the album to be released in the
fall ! (see photos in the Photos section)
At the end of May, it was a grand reunion with many of my great
friends at the Modern Drummer Drum Festival in NJ ... We're all
so busy, it's such a nice opportunity to catch up, hang out, and
exchange road stories! (see photos in the Clinic
Photos section)
This summer and fall are shaping up to be busy ones as well ...
After performing at Belmont Raceway during the Belmont Stakes
(the third race of the Triple Crown) with blues legend Ernie Munich,
I began working on an experimental improvisational project with
New York stalwart master guitarist Ray Ippolitto. An album is
in the works, and several shows have been scheduled including
two at the Makor Music and Culture Centre in Manhattan ... Please
check out the "Tour" page for
dates and times :-) ....

Station albums ... In between, I will be entering the studio with
Japanese power rock icon AKI to track 7 songs for his next album,
completing tracks for Elijah Steele and The Black Hats new album
in Montreal, and going on a short Northeast US tour with girl
pop/punk rockers G-Spot ... In September, I head back to Europe
for a tour with indie pop star Kirsten
DeHaan in support of her release "Conform" ...

Collective on Tuesday June 28th, 7pm ! Come one and come all!

me in your thoughts ! I do genuinely appreciate your support,
and I look forward to seeing you all very soon :-)
Take care, 'till we e-chat again,
March
2005 - Spring has almost Sprung
Hello to all my friends here, there and everywhere :)
The first part of 2005 has been a very busy one for me. After
completing Salme Dahlstrom's single "Take It Off Baby"
and recording 10 tracks (in 1 day!) for Stephen Patrik And The
Shore's new release "Grunion Run" (www.stephenpatrik.com),
I headed out in mid-January to the west coast for some soundtrack
dates in Vancouver. I then continued on to the NAMM Show in Los
Angeles to make appearances at several of my endorsement booths
(Pearl, Sabian, Evans, Vic Firth) and to catch up with old friends
Thomas Lang - you're one hard working man! ... Brian Frazier Moore
- between the T.P. jokes and Christina Aguilera stories, comedy
is the order of the day ! ... John Blackwell - great seeing you
amigo, always find myself running into you either in Australia,
or Europe, or in some other whacky place when you're on hiatus
from Prince ... Forrest Robinson - you are the man, you are the
man, where India Arie, ski slopes and Sabian parties are concerned,
you are the Man !) ... Photos of all the fun are to be had on
the Sabian website at www.sabian.com
...
From LA, I flew directly to the South of France, to make an appearance
with indie artist Kirsten DeHaan (www.kirstendehaan.com)
at the MIDEM Show in Cannes ... and how fortunate for us, we arrive
into the first snow storm in that region in 15 years !
Upon my return to New York, I headed into the studio with Narada
Records recording artist Don Kemenker to track 5 tunes for his
next album "Blueberry Beer", with Grammy winning producer
Dan Hartung and ace engineer Ezra Matychuk at the helm ...
2 days later, I was in Jacksonville Florida with indie artists
5th of July (www.5thof
july.com) to perform at the Superbowl festivities, opening
shows for Blues Traveller, Hank Williams Jr. and Willie Nelson
... Check out the photos here ...
I also completed an album recording of progressive intense and
vibey electric jazz with "Elimotion",
featuring (John McLachlan/Joe Zawinul/Herbie Hancock) bassist
extraordinaire Matt Garrison, guitar phenom Elijah Steele, and
renegade turntablist DJ Logic (fresh off tour with John Mayer)
... Album release and European tour to come shortly ... I also
had the pleasure of recording 4 tracks for Albanian Pop/World
Music sensation Simaku for her new cd, due out in early May 2005
...
March is going to be a busy one as well ... After our appearance
on the renegade TV program "Total Waste of Time", I
head out with indie pop icon Emiko (www.emikomusic.com)
for a tour of the Northeast, and then return to NYC to record
her next album ... I also will be contributing more tracks to
Elijah Steele and The Black Hats hard rock recording ... For all
my local show dates, times & locations, as well as my out
of town tour schedule, please click here

Take care all, thanks so much for your support and well wishes
! Happiness to
you and yours :)
